CASA FACTS

Nationally, approximately 3.2 million allegations of child abuse and neglect (including 5.8 million children), were made to Child Protective Service agencies in 2007.

An estimated 794,000 children were substantiated as victims of child maltreatment, a rate of 10.6 per 1,000 children in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Approximately one half of the victims were white; twenty-percent were African-American; twenty-percent were Hispanic. Just over two-percent were American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asians or Pacific Islanders.

The youngest children (from birth through age 4) were most likely to be determined to be maltreated than all other age groups.

In 2010, almost 4,000 children were found to be abused and neglected in Jefferson County and over 1,300 children were in foster care in Jefferson County.

CASA served 320 of these children in 2010 leaving over 1,000 children without an advocate.

Jefferson County CASA has 52 active volunteers.
